Ruth Mareen, Violin
violinist, improviser, social-artistic worker from Ghent (Belgium)
I’m from Ghent, a quaint city in Belgium. My favorite sound there is the soundscape of the Graslei in summer. This is a carfree part of the city close to the water. People just gather here and talk. You hear the buzz of only human voices from streets away.
I’m the violinist of this collective. I love improvising, and actually wrote my master research at the Royal Conservatoire of The Hague on improvising solo preludes on the violin, and did a year of jazz studies with drummer Dré Pallemaerts and bassist Jos Machtel.
Next to playing the violin I’m a passionate teacher and educator. For my master research in education at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels I made a blueprint for workshop giving and co-creation with adults with diverse cultural backgrounds. This means I’m very involved in the design of the workshops of this ensemble.
