Porter Ellerman, Percussion
Percussionist, sound artist, environmentalist, instrument creator from Tucson, Arizona (USA)
From the dry and open Sonoran Desert, I’m most to the sound of immense stillness, which seems to be a rare treat in most parts of my daily life now. Aside from my frequent trips outdoors, I spend a lot of time tinkering and exploring the sounds of everyday objects. How might our homes, waste, and things we take for granted be able to tell a musical story?
With a passion for strange and new sounds, it may not be surprising that I am a percussionist. I have a deep love for experimental and new music, having written my own electronic music with the University of Arizona’s Cross-talk ensemble, a fully electronic percussion ensemble. Beyond this, my specialized training in the Royal Conservatoire of The Hague meant I worked closely with living composers in the Ensemble Academy, something I continue as a full-time member of both Ear to the Earth and New European Ensemble.
My Master Research focused on the development of a percussion methodology that engages with environmentalism. In fact, that is how this ensemble came into being. Together with my colleagues in Ear to the Earth, I love to connect with people in the performance moment and use unexpected instruments or materials. This means I am deeply involved in the development and creation of our projects, forming the artistic vision for the ensemble.
